In Amazonian streams, damming caused by road construction changes the system's hydrological dynamics and biological communities. We tested whether the degree of specialization in fish (Bryconops giacopinii) individuals is higher in pristine stream environments with intact ecological conditions than in streams dammed due to the construction of a highway in the Amazon rainforest. To achieve this, stomach content data and stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) in tissues with varying isotopic…

Individual variation in feeding morphology, not diet, can facilitate the success of generalist species in urban ecosystems

The results show that guppies in urban and non‐urban populations are not individual specialists, having a similar generalist diet despite the high population density, and suggest that individual variation in feeding efficiency can be a critical overlooked trait that facilitates the success of urban generalists.

The results overturn traditional conceptions associated with the niche variation hypothesis and illustrate that niche expansion is not invariably associated with increased IS, because the distance between individual’s niches can increase, as well as the breadth of those niches (WIC).

Investigating the degree to which coyotes utilized anthropogenic subsidies and exhibited individual diet specialization across the urban-rural gradient in southern California found that suburban animals had the broadest isotopic niches and maintained similar individual specialization to rural coyotes.

It is shown that a species usually considered to be a dietary generalist was in fact a heterogenous collection of specialist and generalist individuals, and surprisingly, dietary specialisation appeared to disadvantage male leopards.

It is suggested that different relationships between isotopic niche trajectory length and fitness within thin‐toed frogs are driven by variability in the resource environment, negative density dependence and allometric constraints, and could drive correlated evolution in phenotypic traits underlying diet flexibility.

This work investigated how available resource breadth and competition together shape multidimensional niche variation and interspecific niche overlap in 42 populations of congeneric tropical frog species to emphasize that patterns of exploitation of resources in multiple dimensions are driven by both competitive interactions and extrinsic factors such as local resource breadth.

It is hypothesized that land conversion and land use change increase the availability of lentic habitats and associated biodiversity in Southern Amazonian landscapes through at least four drivers: river damming promotes the formation of reservoirs, which are novel permanent lentic water bodies, and a rise in the water table driven by local deforestation promotes the expansion of shallow riparian floodplains.

P phenotypic plasticity associated with functional trade-offs is related in a nonlinear fashion with the degree of IS and positively with population niche width, opposite to the niche variation hypothesis.
